As schools in Ukraine opened for the new academic year on September 1, repeated air raid alerts in Kyiv and elsewhere have\u00a0disrupted classes and sent children into shelters, sometimes for hours.
On September 3, Olya\u2019s daughter managed to complete just one lesson \u2013 math \u2013before alerts sent her fourth-grade class into a cramped underground shelter.
\u201cThe shelter is not equipped for studying,\u201d said Olya, who, like others interviewed, asked to be identified by their first name, showing me a photo of the children squeezed together underground. \u201cEven if they [teachers] wanted to continue classes, they wouldn\u2019t be able to. It\u2019s too noisy.\u201d
Other subjects were assigned as homework. The children also had virtually no breaks: when an alert ended, they rushed back to the classroom to make up lost lesson time.
Recently, air raid alerts have\u00a0sounded in Kyiv as many as 10 times a day, for more than five hours on some days.
Even schools with shelters equipped for classes struggle to maintain normal learning. Ira\u2019s daughter attends a school in central Kyiv and finds shelter lessons stressful. \u201cShe cannot hear the teacher properly,\u201d Ira said. \u201cAnd there are too many people in one small space.\u201d
Little is normal about childhood in wartime, and school is no exception. Ukrainian children have experienced well over four years of interrupted education since Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion. Russian attacks have\u00a0damaged many schools, forcing them to close temporarily, extend vacations, or switch to remote learning.
In Kyiv alone since February 2022, 314 educational facilities have been damaged,\u00a0according to city authorities, including at least 107 so far in 2026.
Attacks have also affected education indirectly. Strikes on printing and logistics facilities this summer reportedly destroyed nearly 1.2 million textbooks, almost 9 percent of those printed for the 2026-2027 academic year.
The coming months could bring further disruption, as the Russian government has\u00a0threatened to continue attacks on Ukraine\u2019s energy infrastructure. Such attacks during the 2025-2026 winter\u00a0caused prolonged electricity and heating outages, forcing many schools to close and making online learning\u00a0difficult.
Russia should end unlawful attacks on civilians and civilian objects in Ukraine and take all feasible precautions to minimize civilian harm. Ukrainian authorities, with international support, should ensure schools have shelters equipped for holding classes, backup power, and other resources needed to help children learn safely.
